Program Description:

Cedars Academy is a college preparatory boarding school for middle, high school, and post secondary students with NLD and Asperger’s Syndrome that embodies consistency and structure in a rigorous academic environment. Cedars Academy emphasizes time management, accountability, and responsibility, personal and social awareness throughout the school and in the student’s daily life.

Cedars Academy is a residential school for middle and high school boys and girls who have been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder, (ADD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, (ADHD), Asperger’s Syndrome (AS) and Nonverbal Learning Disorder (NLD).

Our family-like atmosphere, structured behavioral treatment and challenging college preparatory curriculum are the paving stones on the path to success for our graduates. Cedars is located on 73 picturesque acres of both wooded and landscaped terrain on the Delmarva Peninsula, only a two-hour drive from Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Washington D.C.

We are a small boys and girls boarding school for forty students in our home-like setting. Our mission is to educate the whole child. We believe that every moment of every day presents a teaching possibility for children with learning disabilities. We live with and teach our students not only in the classroom, but also at every opportunity. In building and sustaining our community, we inculcate skills in self-management and affective modulation, which are crucial to successful social skills acquisition. Ultimately, social skills are the vehicles by which optimal success is reached.

Our college preparatory curriculum weaves pragmatic social skills building into an enriched academic experience. Cedars Academy is an environment where all staff members consistently reinforce positive, appropriate communication and interaction.

Each student is carefully assessed when he or she enters the Cedars Academy boarding school for children with ADD/ADHD, Aspergers syndrome and Nonverbal Learning Disability. We use a variety of assessments to determine a student’s strengths and areas of needs including the Learning Style Analysis by Technology Based Solutions (TBS). The TBS assessment is designed to enhance educational success by discovering how students learn, work, and study effectively. The assessment covers 25 learning dimensions of diversity such as Left/Right Brain Dominance, Sensory Modalities, Physical Needs, Environment Social Grouping, Attitudes, and others.

When a student enters Cedars Academy we sit with the student and their parents to develop an Individual Learning Plan (ILP). The ILP can include goals for academics, social and interpersonal areas. Each student is looked at individually and their goals are tailored to meet their needs. The ILP is designed to move the student towards academic as well as developmental success.

Our students take classes, which meet the credit requirements for The State of Delaware, Department of Education. We look at each transcript carefully in order to keep the sequence of courses that they have been taking. Here at Cedars we strive to provide each student with the courses they need to meet graduation requirements and be prepared for their next level of education. Cedars Academy offers art, music and physical education as well. We maintain a low student/teacher ratio in order to provide each child with individual attention to meet their needs.

Generally a student will take four core academic courses (English, Science, Social Studies, Math) with opportunity to participate in electives, such as art, music and foreign language. Homework is often assigned to enhance the classroom lessons. The students have supervised homework built into their daily schedule.

During the summer and continuing through senior year of high school, students can attend classes at one of the local colleges. This opportunity helps to ease the transition to college, and helps pinpoint areas that may need further skill development before graduation. Here at Cedars, we help to prepare students for the SAT and other college examinations, as well as guide them through the process of college selection and application.

Cedars Academy also offers a Post-Secondary Program. The Post-Secondary Program will help students build their college experience after they finish their senior year. This will give students a year to experience college life, but still have the support of a structured environment while learning to become independent young adult learners. Cedars’ location makes it easy to access several local college and university programs.

Cedars Academy helps students learn to become lifelong learners by teaching them skills for success. We understand that each student has a unique learning style and brings with them many unique qualities. We help students identify their skills and focus on helping them learn to be learners. We understand their obstacles and provide them with the techniques and strategies to move forward in their education.

We are a year-round college preparatory boarding school, providing two full semesters and a summer session. Report cards are issued five times a year with progress reports each month. Weekend parent training sessions are held throughout the year. At Cedars Academy family involvement is important and we realize that parents are an integral part of their child's total education and development.

Cedars Academy recognizes the importance of physical activities for our students. Our Physical Education program promotes quality health and exercise; self-awareness and efficacy; information that is essential to living a healthy life; finding the athlete in every student; and displaying leadership and sportsmanship both on and off the court or field.

Cedars Academy is proud to offer intramural sports including cross country, soccer, basketball, and softball.
Cedars Academy enrolls students ages 11-18 with problems in focusing, sequencing, and organization and related educational concerns who have high potential that has not been realized. Cedars is a private school specializing in children with ADD, ADHD, NLD (non verbal learning disability), or Asperger's Syndrome. Parents may visit the campus of the boarding school in Delaware to discuss enrollment and to learn their role in changing the direction of their student's life. School records, a parental history, and an updated medical/dental form are necessary to complete admission and enrollment.

We offer rolling admissions. New students are accepted throughout the year to our Private Schools Specializing in ADD, ADHD, NLD, and Asperger's in Delaware.
