Program Description:
King George School is a sanctuary of learning and growth for bright young people who are having difficulty succeeding in a traditional high school environment. Emphasizing visual and performing arts as a vehicle for personal expression and creativity, King George School inspires 9th-12th graders to become life-long learners who honor and value the human experience.
King George School is a place of opportunity and hope. Past problems are not always indicative of future performance, especially within the framework of King George School. Students who have experienced problems in more traditional high school settings often succeed beyond expectation in the nurturing, structured environment. With an emphasis on emotional growth as well as academic excellence, students receive the skills they need to make healthy choices in pursuing solutions to their problems. With one-to-one mentoring and small classrooms, the faculty gives personal attention to students as they emerge from the shadows of past circumstances.
The academic program at King George School is designed for intelligent students with aspirations of higher education. Classes are structured to include both academic strength and creative learning. Each class includes a mix of traditional instruction and projects designed to challenge and engage the nontraditional learner. The fully integrated curriculum places equal weight on excellent academics, personal development, and creative process. Visual and performing arts are key components of King George School’s curriculum. Through artistic expression students learn to apply the concepts and skills they use in the arts to all other aspects of their education. Arts instruction and development features experiences in drama, visual and tactile arts, dance, music, chorus, and photography. The emotional growth curriculum is woven into everyday life at the school. The exceptional mentoring program pairs students with the resources of a mature, caring adult who assists in guiding their emotional and academic development. Regular communications classes provide an atmosphere for dialogue, group discussion, and exploration of feelings. Through this curriculum students capitalize on personal strengths and shift focus from past labeling and criticism. Students begin to improve relationships with adults and peers and create a foundation of resiliency and self-understanding for future success.
