Program Description:

Open Sky’s holistic wilderness program engages the transformational power of nature to strengthen relationships, foster growth, cultivate awareness, and develop overall health and wellness. Our unique approach combines traditional therapeutic approaches, naturopathic medicine, innovative substance abuse treatment, organic, whole foods nutrition, and healthy outdoor living for all of our students.

Open Sky works with male and female adolescents, ages 13-17, and male and female young adults, ages 18-28, in a separate adult program. Our highly experienced clinicians effectively treat a variety of behavioral and emotional issues. The average group size at Open Sky is seven, smaller than the industry norm, to provide for a higher level of individualized care.

Open Sky is designed around developing physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Students participate in yoga and meditation on a daily basis. Other unique opportunities for spiritual growth, including ceremonies, solos, sweat lodges, and vision quests, are also part of the Open Sky program.

Our therapy utilizes the most current, proven methods for healing. Open Sky has a PhD-level Research Director who guides outcome studies on the effectiveness of our program and is well-versed in current trends in psychotherapy literature, adolescent treatment, and research about wilderness therapy.

The Open Sky program is family centered. We offer distinctive family services such as a weekly group family teleconference, weekly field updates, a Family Reunion Workshop, and our Parent Wellness Weekend in Durango.

Open Sky includes naturopathic medicine in order to offer families safe, holistic treatment choices such as homeopathy, herbal medicine, and individualized nutrition planning. The Open Sky menu is alive with organic fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and healthy meats, and proteins. Our students cook and eat an organic, whole foods diet because research shows that physical health is integrally linked to emotional health.

The Open Sky team is made up of Masters and Doctorate-level counselors, Ivy League-trained managers, and educated and experienced field guides, who altogether have extensive experience in the fields of wilderness therapy and holistic medicine. Open Sky is an employee-owned company.
