Program Description:

Soltreks is dedicated to creating meaningful and intentional wilderness experiences for teenagers, young adults, and their families. It is a program for individuals seeking awareness of what limits them in their lives, their relationships, and their relationship to life. Soltreks’ mission is to guide individuals and families toward reclaiming their personal power while discovering their true potential through customized and individualized wilderness treks. Soltreks’ exceptional standards of excellence provide the structure, consistency and accountability that empower participants toward self discovery. While living simply and quietly within nature, participants learn strategies for spirited relationships and creating successful transitions.

Soltreks is an Outdoor Behavioral Healthcare program that integrates principles of wilderness therapy and a family systems perspective with grounding in evidence-based clinical practices that promote and honor personal growth, promote change, and restore healthy families. Our strength-based approach teaches and models solution-focused skills and processes.

Family involvement is vital to each child's success. Experience shows that when a family is engaged in a positive way in their child's healing, the child's chance of a positive outcome and long term success is greatly magnified. Soltreks provides weekly progress reports by way of computer e-mail and telephone conference calls. These reports keep parents informed and involved in their child's progress, and keeps the lines of communication open between staff and parents.

Soltreks is an organization member of the Outdoor Behavioral Healthcare Research Cooperative (OBHRC) whose mission is to conduct rigorous evaluative research for programs to improve safety, delivery, and outcomes from outdoor treatment. As a member of OBHRC, Soltreks participates in tracking the progress of their students as part of the study on the efficacy and process of wilderness therapy. Treatment outcomes are evaluated through client reports of well-being at admission, upon completion of a trek and several months following their graduation utilizing the Youth Outcome Questionnaire (Y-OQ) and the Brief Family Assessment Measure.

Soltreks is committed to continuous program enrichment. Soltreks has a 97% program completion rate.

The Summer Adventure Program is a 6-week high impact, structured, and diverse program that includes backpacking on the Superior Hiking Trail, a ropes course, rock climbing, and a canoe expedition in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in northern Minnesota. Students enroll in a group of up to six students with 2-3 staff. Each session integrates a service learning project, writing assignments, adventure activities, and natural history of the area while focusing on individual issues that impact personal choices in relationships and behaviors. Soltreks' Directors and instructional staff work with each family to consistently communicate their child's program goals, behavioral assessment, progress, and transitional plan.
