Program Description:

The Discovery School of Virginia and the Discovery School of Virginia for Girls serve young people who are experiencing emotional, behavioral, and learning problems. The 318 acre boys program and 150 acre girls program are located on separate campuses in central Virginia. The Discovery Schools use a group problem solving process and the natural environment to promote a student's overall positive development.

The philosophy of The Discovery Schools of Virginia asserts that students with emotional and behavioral problems can be affected positively by learning to hold themselves accountable for their actions and emotions through the use of the group process in the outdoor setting. Within this therapeutic approach it is believed that academic success naturally follows a student's emotional and personal growth and his or her successful reintegration into the family must be based on mutual respect, good communication, and effective problem solving. Furthermore, founders believe that when challenged and treated with respect, students grow and develop the sense of self worth and personal responsibility they need to become successful within their community.

The Discovery Schools of Virginia are committed to the following principles:

Academic success follows emotional and personal growth.
Family reintegration is based on mutual respect, good communication, and effective problem solving.
Young people with emotional and behavioral problems must be held accountable for their actions.
The outdoor setting and the group process plays a vital role in helping young people see themselves honestly.
Young people who are properly challenged emotionally, mentally, and physically will develop a positive sense of self-worth and a sense of responsibility.

Located on 318 acres in central Virginia, The Discovery Schools use group therapy and the natural environment to promote a student's overall positive development. Each student is assigned to a group that includes ten to twelve students, two adult group leaders, and a supervisor. Each group lives in a rustic campsite village comprised of 8-10 cabin-sized tents, which the students design, maintain, and replace as needed.

Extracurricular Activities

While offering traditional recreational activities including basketball, football, soccer, softball, volleyball, swimming, bowling, and skating, the School also offers an opportunity for students to plan extensive recreational adventure trips and outdoor activities such as backpacking, canoeing, caving, or bicycling. The School also provides opportunities to participate in community, social, and cultural activities on a weekly basis and to plan special outings to museums, historical sites, and other areas of interest, such as zoos, aquariums, colleges, local industries or state parks.

The Discovery School of Virginia and the Discovery School of Virginia for Girls are fully accredited secondary schools, offering middle school and high school credit classes, as well as special education, remedial, and GED preparatory classes. In the formal school, small class size and individualized instruction encourage students to progress rapidly through material in which they exhibit strength, and to spend extra time in areas where they show trouble attaining mastery.
