Program Description:

Life in America can be hectic and confusing. Because we are located on the island of Upolu, Samoa everything about us is unique. Not only is Samoa beautiful, it is unspoiled, unhurried, and uncluttered. This is where our student’s first steps on the road to recovery begin. Our therapeutic milieu is structured so the student will understand why he is there and what goals need to be met.

Helping youth overcome emotional difficulties, substance abuse and other problems is a difficult job. Coral Reef Academy is a residential school dedicated to improving the lives of youth for over eleven years. Our philosophy and residential treatment approach is the result of many years of experience working with adolescents struggling to deal with the challenge of growing up responsibly. Our staff take pride in helping change young men’s lives for the better and do so with experience, expertise, and vigor.

Coral Reef Academy has combined its time-proven approach with the perfect treatment setting of the South Pacific, resulting in a unique and highly successful personal growth and educational opportunity for the struggling youth of today.

We are skilled in treating adolescents who experience a number of symptoms and problems including, low self-esteem, mood disorders, history of chemical abuse and oppositional defiant behaviors as well as maturational and social adjustment issues including, problems with anger management, lack of empathy for others, poor coping skills and thinking errors.
The clinical services provided by in-house professional staff are core elements of treatment for each resident at Coral Reef Academy.

A carefully selected group of professionals with masters or doctoral degrees provide individual, group and family therapy. Recognizing that each resident is unique, Coral Reef Academy customizes an individual treatment plan for each youth. These treatment elements help residents develop communication and relationship skills, strengthen personal identity and foster pro-social attitudes and behaviors.

Individual Therapy
Each student participates in weekly individual therapy with his primary therapist, who is fully qualified to work with adolescents. During this time, issues appearing in the student’s master treatment plan will be addressed.

Group Therapy
For adolescents, group therapy has proven to be a most effective intervention to date in our type of setting, and is a key area of our program. All students will participate in regular group therapy supervised by a clinician. Many topics and issues will be addressed during these groups.

Family Therapy
Family therapy takes place on a bi-weekly basis. It is conducted over the phone as is the case in most therapeutic schools/treatment centers.

Coral Reef Academy’s smaller classroom setting provides an intimate learning environment where youth receive the individual attention and support they need to achieve.
Academic instruction is tailored to accommodate each youth’s individual needs and learning style. We have carefully selected several curricula, to guarantee the highest of quality, flexibility and transferability of credits back to programs/schools in the United States. Some examples of these would be Brigham Young University's Independent Study program and Keystone National High School in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania. Students can catch up with their work and earn the credits that may be deficient in.

Another unique aspect to Coral Reef Academy's school is that in addition to learning the core subjects, our students are taught music, art and Polynesian culture in the classroom. Time is spent learning traditional songs, dances, crafts and culture. Utilizing tutors from local villages and schools our students become well versed in a culture they will come to cherish.
