Program Description:

Second Nature Blue Ridge is a licensed treatment program that uses the wilderness setting in a clinically focused intervention to teach students accountability, communication skills, and healthy emotional and behavioral habits. Treatment plans are individualized for each student and include flexible lengths of stay, single gender treatment groups, daily group therapy, and individualized therapy sessions with doctorate level therapists twice weekly.

Second Nature begins the treatment process by helping parents gain basic control of their adolescent child. Often students come to teen wilderness programs with high levels of acting out (anger towards parents, substance abuse, and breaking of family and school rules) or withdrawal (teen depression, academic failure, and poor social skills). Wilderness therapy begins with the end in mind: teaching your child to be and feel responsible for his/her actions, words, thoughts, and feelings while showing them accountability for those choices.

The wilderness environment, combined with clear boundaries from the family and treatment team, serve to contain acting out behavior and engage students who have been withdrawn. Early on, the focus of treatment is simple accountability and acceptance of the need for time away from family and usual environments. After accepting the structure of the wilderness environment and peer group, your child will focus on accountability and personal engagement in the program; we work with your teen’s strengths to confront his/her frailties, not the other way around.

At Second Nature, your child stops looking for someone to blame for his/her unhappiness because the impulse to avoid fault drops away. When your son or daughter learns accountability and engages in personal growth, she or he can then develop boldness and mastery with tasks and relationships. This transformative experience develops a deep and reassuring confidence that continues to empower the student in wilderness therapy as well as to you at home.

Educational Consultants

Second Nature is a licensed adolescent treatment program that utilizes the experiential opportunities of a wilderness setting in a clinically focused intervention. Second Nature’s use of sophisticated professional therapy and the intensity of outdoor residential care combine to produce powerful effects in the lives of adolescents and their families. This combined approach provides the opportunity to efficiently change problem behaviors and ineffective levels of functioning. Second Nature recommends families work with independent educational consultants, who work with your family, offering assurance of treatment quality and integration for aftercare planning.

Second Nature offers help to families with troubled teens, ages 13 to 17 years old, who struggle with a variety of emotional and behavioral issues such as teen depression, oppositional defiant disorder, and learning disabilities. These issues negatively affect school performance, socialization, self-esteem, and resilience. Typical students have suffered from low self-esteem, teen depression, substance abuse, isolated themselves, expect instant gratification, or act entitled. They have often been found to be self-medicating, are battling with parent-child conflict and failing to respond to limits and rules. Our educated and experienced admissions counselors will help both you and your child understand the treatment process specific to your teen.
